Marcus Anthony's "Extraordinary Mind" is a valuable and worthwhile addition to the too-often ignored discipline of what might best be called "balanced inquiry and perception. "Anthony combines the intuitive with the analytical ... to exemplify how the "so-called left-brained" (analytical abilities) combined with intuitive abilities is most effective in dealing with everyday life, and the future.
In the early sections of this (near 200 page) book he outlines the naturally extended nature of mind, and that it reaches beyond the confines of the brain, via "extended mind" (which is, I believe, another term for what is "nonlocal mind and awareness"). Hence Anthony's correct flagging of the misnomer of mind being left-brained or right-brained, and how such descriptions are limiting and counter-productive.
Having explained 'extended mind' Anthony provides personal experiences of how he's used his extended, intuitive awareness (reliant on nonlocal interconnections) to remain safe in Beijing at the height of the SARS "epidemic". And that is perhaps one of the most valuable messages in this book - that by using our intuitive, extended minds we can feel forward and "know" how to remain safe, in the midst of danger, whether real or as was subsequently recognised, overly feared in the case of SARS.
He provides personal accounts of how dream information has been helpful, and in general terms, the role of intuition being central to important decision-making.
Anthony also rightly calls to account the many misconceptions in religious and spiritual fields. For example, he writes, in regards to the relatively recent craze surrounding Mayan prophecies and calendars:
"There will be no renewal, and no mass enlightenment for most of humanity in 2012. The idea of the coming of the glorious age is equally a projection of the ego. It's a trick that the ego sets up to escape the present moment. And it is only ever in the present, here and now, that Heaven is found. It is not up there, beyond, or coming next week. Enlightenment cannot be achieved or reached. But Grace can be permitted by relaxing fully into the moment ... There is no New Age. There is only now. Today is the day you allow peace, or it is never."
Here he is drawing attention to the nearly universal habit of religious, spiritual and scientific people to objectify the deep and unending potentials within, to forces 'out there'. In religion, God, or Evil are blamed; in spiritual beliefs, a poor alignment of planets, a wrong birth date, or some strangely disconnected and flawed 'ego' can be blamed. In science a mysterious thing called 'chance' is blamed for mutations, and other anomalous phenomena.
This penchant to blame 'out there' (or, 'up there', or 'down there') is the basis for, and origin of tribalism, which historically was beneficial insofar as it did rally together and keep communities and tribes sufficiently tight-knit to survive difficult environments and adversaries. However, tribalism gives rise to 'us versus them' behaviours which is becoming ever-more counter-productive and at-odds with effectively living within an increasingly interconnected, global village.
A variant of tribalism is fundamentalism (tribes of the "righteous" against 'others' who are perceived to be wrong, bad, guilty etc). As Anthony explains in his book, many (whether standard scientific perspectives, or those of a religious persuasion) engage what he calls "confrontational binary thinking". As he writes: "Fundamentalism is an extreme kind of irrational close-mindedness, but its essence is consistent with what I call `confrontational binary thinking', where we take one side of an issue or debate and hammer it out with an opponent without really bothering to think about the content of the debate."
Anthony's "confrontational binary thinking" is what I call "either-or thinking"(1). Contrary to many spiritual schools of thought that seek to 'throw out the baby with the bathwater" (e.g. one's sense of self, or ego) Anthony gives due recognition to the validity and value of identify and rational analysis, and how we need to integrate it with a deeper, intuitive connectedness for best results. As he explains,
"I should clarify that I am not suggesting that you ignore the rational mind, nor to stop analysing information when required. The so-called left-brained cognitive skills do not need to be disposed of in order to use INI (Integrated Intelligence). However, you do need to become aware of the right times to employ either, or both."
Anthony also rightly recognises the systemic influences on spiritual maturity (or lack thereof) - he explains how our standard mechanical-universe views have hampered greater adoption of utilising 'extended mind' (or Integrated Intelligence).
